“A Hidden Gem”
Built at the end of the C17th, Beaulieu is one of the best preserved examples of an early unfortified mansion to be found in Ireland. Nestled between green meadows and ancient woodland on the banks of the River Boyne, it was built around a Plunkett tower house by Sir Henry Tichbourne, a soldier-statesman, who came from Hampshire in the 1620s. Beaulieu is still a family home and has descended through eleven generations, often through the maternal line.
Beaulieu’s unique architecture is in the ‘artisan mannerist’ style, with a hipped roof, tall chimney stacks and delicate, red brick dressings imported from Holland. Inside, a decorative scheme survives from the 1720s, with ornate plasterwork, panelling and paintings attributed to Willem van der Hagen. Family portraits, Baroque carvings of musical instruments, weaponry and a fascinating painting of the town of Drogheda in the early C18th, can all be viewed on a guided tour.
House and garden are open to visitors and small groups – with advance booking for groups of 10, or more. (Please use the Contact Page, for bookings outside of Summer opening days).
A tour guide will show you round – with a tour lasting about 45-50 minutes.
The vibrant 4 acre walled garden is self-guided and contains many unusual plants, shrubs and fruit trees.
(Apologies, there is no longer a car collection, however a photo display remains.)
